Constellations!!

  CONSTELLATIONS

May 23,2021

Hello my sci-buddies and welcome back to another mystifying topic. I know today's blog is a bit late. Okay, okay too late, but I have a very genuine reason for it. We did not have internet for 2 days and it just got started in the evening. So, I was struggling with it and late is better than not posting right?😕😕 Anyways without any further ado let's begin our venture to the city of STARS.

We all have heard the names Orion, Ursa Major, Ursa Minor but do we really know what they are used for? Well these, my friends, are some names of constellations.

First, let us take a look at its definition. A constellation is an assemblage of stars forming a recognizable pattern that is traditionally named after its apparent form or identified with a mythological figure.

I don't know how did I just skip this topic. But according to me, this topic is much more riveting than Auroras. I have always loved stargazing and have spent hours admiring millions of stars shining bright in the dark sky. Scientists use these names of constellations to describe different parts of the night sky.

Let's take an insight into some of the constellations.

URSA MAJOR

The famous group of stars that's easiest to find is the Big Dipper/Great Bear/Ursa Major/Saptarshi. You can easily spot it in the northern part of the sky while in the northern hemisphere. It is made of seven bright stars and if you connect the dots you find a big squarish bowl with a very long handle.

  • In the United States, some people thought it looked like a big ladle so they named it the Big Dipper.
  • In Great Britain, it is called the Plough because they thought it looked like a farmer's plough.
  • In Germany, they thought it looked like a wagon.
  • These same seven stars reminded some ancient people of a giant bear.
Ursa Major is easier to find in the summer when it's higher in the sky.

In winter you should look for another eminent constellation Orion. The first part that you will probably see are the three bright stars in a row.

ORION

In ancient Greece, stargazers thought that they looked like the belt of a hunter. In their opinion, the two bright stars above it would be his shoulders and the two stars below would show his feet.

There are more things you can visualize, like if you use your imagination and follow the stars from one of his shoulders you can see another group of stars like he's holding a shield and those fuzzy lights hanging from his belt seem like a sword. That's why when astronomers talk about constellations they don't just mean the few stars that might form something but they also mean all of the other stuff that in that part of the night sky.

That's all for today's post, I hope you liked it. Stay tuned for more content, I will be posting every Sunday. And feel free to mention any topic you would like me to research on. It maybe regarding recent events or any topic that involves our lovely SCIENCE in it😉😉✌
